Ben A'an is a moderately challenging 2.4 mile out and back trail located in Trossachs National Park in Scotland. In the words of Elle Woods," Why now?, Why this sperm?" errggh well replace that last word with hike. Why this hike? Well let me tell you, the spectacular 360 degree views of Loch Katrine from the top make all the huffing and puffing 100% worth it.

We pulled into the gravel lot, which could probably accomodate 10-15 cars. So it's small, but not too small. We were 1 of 3 cars there in early March. There is a "pay and display" meter in the lot that was around 5 pound to park. Note, there are no toilets at the trailhead, so it's best to go 10 minutes before getting to the park in the town of Callandar, where there are public toilets.
Once we were geared up in our layers, backpack, and hiking boots (yeah, we're legit), we crossed the road to the start of the trail. Not gonna lie, the first glance of the uphill rocky trail had me a little nervous about what's to come, but we took our time and took a few water/breathing breaks and it was just fine.

Eventually the trail flattens out for a while before you hit another section of steep, rocky stairs. Whew! I will say shout out to whoever wrote the motivational words on a few of the rocks. I normally don't condone that cause let's respect nature, but it was small and kept me going as I was heavy breathing up the rocks.

The views got better and better the higher we climbed.

Once we reached the top, we immediatley knew all the blood, sweat, and tears (okay, I'm being dramatic) were worth it. The wind picked up at the top, but it was a sunny, clear, beautiful day. We were surrounded by the serene lochs on both sides, and the rolling hills, which gave me the perfect chance to frolick around and sing "The Hills are Alive with the Sound of Music" in my head.

Despite being considered a challenge, I truly feel Ben A'an is a doable hike for all fitness levels, you'll just have to allow for more time to take your breaks as needed if you're not in the best of shape. I also recommend wearing hiking boots because sections are rocky and steep. Let's not sprain our ankles! These are my favorite hiking boots that are afforable and beginner friendly.
